For someone who claims to be so organised I can’t believe I forgot to pass the incredibly simple and amazing Christmas drink. It needs to be made now to allow the flavours to blend together and coming up to Christmas I’m guessing that most of the ingredients are in the cupboard already as they are the typical tastes and smells for this time of year.
I have to be honest and can’t claim credit for this drink, it’s something I started to make about 15 years ago and now have no idea where the idea originally came from but it is delicious and I have a bottle going all year round.
Ingredients to fill a 2 litre jar
This list looks quite long but don’t worry there is nothing to do apart from put all the ingredients in a jar and shake once a day!
- 1 x 70cl bottle of vodka
- 250g dark muscovado sugar 250g caster sugar
- 100g mixed peel
- 250g sultanas
- 250g raisins
- rind and juice of 1/2 an orange rind and juice of 1/2 a lemon
- 2 teaspoons almond essence
- 2 teaspoons vanilla essence
- 6 cloves
- 2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon of ground ginger
- 1 teaspoon of grated nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon of allspice
Put all the above ingredients into any 2 litre jar that has a tightly fitting lid and shake thoroughly every day.
Strain the liquid from the jar on christmas day and have in a small shot glass after dinner.
The fruit should be kept (remove the cloves) in the jar and is delicious with a vanilla ice cream or can be turned into a rum and raisin ice cream which is one of my favorites.
